ACCESSIBILITY IN RAMARA TOWNSHIP Accessibility Plan for Ramara Township The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 was passed to improve access and opportunities for people with disabilities. The Act provides for people with disabilities to be involved in the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to allow them to fully take part in the life of the province. Each year municipal councils are required to prepare an Accessibility Plan through an Accessibility Advisory Committee (ACC) or by consulting with people with disabilities. Municipalities with populations over 10,000 must form an ACC. Ramara's population is currently 9472 and is therefore not required to form an ACC. However, Ramara does host an annual Accessibility Plan public meeting on the last Thursday in October of each year at 7:00 p.m. at the Ramara Centre, to receive comments from the public regarding Accessibility in Ramara. Accessible Customer Service Policy The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 was passed to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, building, structures and premises on or before January 1, 2025, by developing, implementing and enforcing accessibility standards. The Act recognizes the history of discrimination against persons with disabilities and established the following five standards to overcome barriers: - Customer Service Standard
- Building Environment Standard
- Employment Standard
- Information/Communication Standard
- Transportation Standard
The Customer Service Standard is the only standard that has been passed as regulation and is now considered law. The other four standards regarding building, employment, information/communication and transportation are all in the development or review stage or are before the Minister of Community and Social Services for implementation as law.
